1-2 October 2018. The first transnational meeting in VILNIUS
The first transnational meeting for the Erasmus + project Media: To Understand and to Create (The Implementation of the Media Education in Schools) was completed successfully in Vilnius Lithuania. From Monday the 1st of October to Tuesday the 2nd of October 2018, the coordinators and legal representatives from three schools, two universities and a Lifelong Learning Centre, from three European countries, Lithuania, Greece and Croatia, gathered to discuss the implementation of the above project.
In the
course of two busy days, delegates from the Vilniaus Gedimino Technikos
Universitas (VGTU) of Lithuania, the
Vilnius Salomeja Neris gymnasium, the
4th General Lyceum of Katerini, the Lifelong Centre, KEPA Pierias, the
Elektrotehnicka I prometna skola of Osijek and the Art and Culture Academy of Osijek,
re-examined all aspects of the joint
project they have undertaken. In an atmosphere of mutual trust and
understanding they reached consensus regarding the division of tasks and duties
and finalized the dates for all the events included in the project.
The
representatives of the 4th General Lyceum of Katerini were greeted warmly at the Vilnius airport by
Lina Stasiunaite, Oksana Jankuviene and Donanata Kriukas, key members of the Lithuanian Erasmus+ project
work group. The first day of the meeting commenced with speeches from the Greek
Ambassador to Lithuania, Dr Vasiliki Dikopoulou and the First Secretary of the
Croatian Embassy in Lithuania, Mr Berislav Zivkovic. After the welcoming
speeches, the principal of the 4th General Lyceum of Katerini, Dr Georgios
Makris, presented the principal of the Vilnius Salomeja Neris gymnasium, Ms
Jolita Marcinkevicieni, with two books as a token of friendship. The first book was a limited edition
containing rare pictures of the city of Katerini, offered by the Mayor of
Katerini, Mr Savvas Xionidis. The second was a beautifully illustrated book
containing information about Mount Olympus, offered by the Head of the Regional
Authority of Pieria, Ms Sofia Mavridou.
On
the second day of the meeting we were given the opportunity to visit the
Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania, where we were greeted by a
representative of our associated partner, NGO Meno Avilys, a company that is an
expert in the creation of Media Literacy courses and will undertake the
external assessment of our project. After this, a professor from the Vilniaus
Gedimino Technikos Universitas outlined the content of the Media Literacy course that will be offered by
the university to the teachers of the three participating schools, during their
five-day visit to Vilnius in November 2018. Following this, we visited the
upper secondary general education school Vilnius Salomeja Neris gymnasium,
which has undertaken the role of coordinator of our common project. There we
were cordially welcomed by the principal of the school, Ms Jolita
Marcinkevicieni, had the opportunity to witness how the school operates and
taste the delicious, healthy meals the school offers both to students and
teachers.
On
the same day, we visited the Ministry of Education of Lithuania where we had
the opportunity not only to present our project but also to discuss the
importance of Media Literacy with the Lithuanian Education Council, Arminas
Varanauuskas and the head of the Education Development Centre of the Information and Communication Division, Laura
Bačinskienė. After our visit at the Ministry of Education, we had a very useful
and informative meeting with the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO
Communication and Information Programme Coordinator Miglė Mašanauskienė, who
introduced a worldwide acknowledged conception and classification of media
literacy.
Our
stay in Vilnius ended with a lovely meal at a traditional Lithuanian restaurant
offered to all delegates by our generous Lithuanian hosts.
We
are confident that this first so enlightening and fruitful meeting, which took
place in a context of mutual agreement and willingness for cooperation, marks a
perfect beginning for our two-year project which aims at creating a 34-hour
curriculum for the teaching of Media literacy and the relevant methodological
tools of our “Media and Society” project, which is funded by the European
Commission.

were provided with accommodation at the Panorama hotel of Vilnius.
On
the premises of Vilniaus Gedimino Technikos Universitetas (VGTU), the first day
of the meeting commenced with speeches from the vice-rector of the Faculty of
Creative Industries, Dr……. and the principal of Vilnius Salomeja Neris
gymnasium, Jolita Marcinkevicieni. This was followed by a three-hour seminar
entitled: Media and society. Evolution of new media. The visual turn presented

workshop, where all members had the opportunity to sample foods characteristic
of the cuisines of the three participating countries.
The
activities of the second day took place at the Linkmenys factory, part of the
facilities belonging to VGTU, which includes a large number of laboratories and
workshops, which can be utilized not only by the students of VGTU but also by
school students. The Lithuanian education system places great emphasis on
developing creativity, initiative and innovation. After a short tour around
Linkmenys factory, the participants attended the first part of a four-hour
lecture entitled: Use of videotools in lessons, where Arturas Kavaliauskas
presented them with the basics of film-making. A short coffee break was
followed by the second part of the lecture. After the lecture, a representative
of NGO Meno Avilys (experts in the creation of media curricula), who are
involved in this project as external evaluators, presented and assigned to all
the teachers a task which involved the creation of an original, five-minute
film in the form of a travelogue. After the lunch break all participants
visited the historical village of Trakai, situated next to a lake with a
fascinating island castle. Here, they used their smartphones to shoot
characteristic scenes.

lecture by Arturas Kavaliauskas, during which participants were presented and
became familiar with the features of the film editing software, they tried to
utilize the software to edit the scenes they had shot and create a film. Their
effort was successful since even the most inexperienced managed to create a
short film. Finally, after lunch, in the same laboratory, a representative of
NGO Meno Avilys joined the group initiating a critical discussion of the films
made.
The
activities of the final day took place again in the centre of Vilnius, in the
library of the Creative Industries Faculty, of VGTU, where Kristina
Stankeviciute lectured them on the subject of: Media and social responsibility.
Ethical questions. Here, after lunch the first LTT was completed with the
signing and presentation to all participants of the certificates of attendance
and Europasses.
All
in all, this five-day training on media and digital literacy proved
fascinating. It was the first step in our effort to gain the necessary means
that will help us create the “Media and Society” curriculum and methodological
material for its implementation in class, which is the main goal of our joint
effort. The organising of the LTT by Vilnius Salomeja Neris gymnasium and VGTU
were of an exceptionally high standard. All members of the Lithuanian team
