In an atmosphere of mutual trust and understanding they reached consensus regarding the division of tasks and duties and finalized the dates for all the events included in the project.

The representatives of the 4th General Lyceum of Katerini  were greeted warmly at the Vilnius airport by Lina Stasiunaite, Oksana Jankuviene and Donanata Kriukas, key  members of the Lithuanian Erasmus+ project work group. The first day of the meeting commenced with speeches from the Greek Ambassador to Lithuania, Dr Vasiliki Dikopoulou and the First Secretary of the Croatian Embassy in Lithuania, Mr Berislav Zivkovic. After the welcoming speeches, the principal of the 4th General Lyceum of Katerini, Dr Georgios Makris, presented the principal of the Vilnius Salomeja Neris gymnasium, Ms Jolita Marcinkevicieni, with two books as a token of friendship.  The first book was a limited edition containing rare pictures of the city of Katerini, offered by the Mayor of Katerini, Mr Savvas Xionidis. The second was a beautifully illustrated book containing information about Mount Olympus, offered by the Head of the Regional Authority of Pieria, Ms Sofia Mavridou.

On the second day of the meeting we were given the opportunity to visit the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania, where we were greeted by a representative of our associated partner, NGO Meno Avilys, a company that is an expert in the creation of Media Literacy courses and will undertake the external assessment of our project. After this, a professor from the Vilniaus Gedimino Technikos Universitas outlined the content of the  Media Literacy course that will be offered by the university to the teachers of the three participating schools, during their five-day visit to Vilnius in November 2018. Following this, we visited the upper secondary general education school Vilnius Salomeja Neris gymnasium, which has undertaken the role of coordinator of our common project. There we were cordially welcomed by the principal of the school, Ms Jolita Marcinkevicieni, had the opportunity to witness how the school operates and taste the delicious, healthy meals the school offers both to students and teachers.

On the same day, we visited the Ministry of Education of Lithuania where we had the opportunity not only to present our project but also to discuss the importance of Media Literacy with the Lithuanian Education Council, Arminas Varanauuskas and the head of the Education Development Centre of the  Information and Communication Division, Laura Bačinskienė.  Our stay in Vilnius ended with a lovely meal at a traditional Lithuanian restaurant offered to all delegates by our generous Lithuanian hosts.

We are confident that this first so enlightening and fruitful meeting, which took place in a context of mutual agreement and willingness for cooperation, marks a perfect beginning for our two-year project which aims at creating a 34-hour curriculum for the teaching of Media literacy and the relevant methodological tools of our “Media and Society” project, which is funded by the European Commission.

Successful completion of Erasmus+ IMES project

A major international project is primarily focused on media literacy and ways to create or improve curricula through which media literacy is taught.

The project fully funded by the European Union and involved six partners from three countries: Vilnius Salomeja Neris Gymnasium (Lithuania) as the project leader, then Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Lithuania), 4th Lyceum if Katerini High School (Greece) , KENTRO EREVNAS PROGRAMMATISOU & ANAPTYXIS (KEPA) PIERIAS - Mr Konstantinos Spanos as representative (Greece) and the Electrical Engineering and Traffic School Osijek and the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek as Croatian partners.

The project consisted of several parts and stages that took place alternately in all three countries over two and a half years: Transnational Meetings for the purpose of creating and arranging all activities; educational activities (Learning Teaching Training Activities) with topics from various areas related to the media; Dissemination Activities with the aim of disseminating information about the project and knowledge and skills acquired in education, as well as other activities such as online meetings and agreement of participants through the Zoom platform(due to pandemic concerns) in the final phase of the project.

The results of the project were a new curriculum and methodological materials for a new subject in the field of media literacy. These materials were published in electronic and printed form in four languages (English, Lithuanian, Greek and Croatian) with elaborated methodological procedures and a series of examples and practical tasks for high school students, and were jointly designed and compiled by representatives of all project participants and partners. The subject is called Media and Society, and its estimated duration is 34 school hours. In the school / academic year 2019/2020. it was realized as a pilot project in selected schools. After additional corrections, the curriculum is in its final form from the school / academic year 2020/2021. in some high schools in Lithuania it is integrated into the regular classes of the grammar school program, and in Greece and Croatia as an extracurricular activity.

methodology: The participants were taught the role of photography and digital images in general in modern media such as online services, social networks, digital storytelling, interactive multimedia and more. Through teamwork, creativity, critique and decision-making exercises, they were able to analyze the social implications and role of photography and photographic storytelling in journalism, marketing and communication. They were able to use image processing techniques to prepare images for communication purposes.

Also they were able to create photographic projects, photographic narratives and understand the role of the image in the changing internet environment, social networks and modern multimedia applications (e.g augmented reality), to examine and select the appropriate techniques for embedding images on various online and multimedia platforms (thanks to modern adult teaching techniques)

The project officially started on September 1, 2018 and was initially scheduled to run until August 31, 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, its completion was extended by 6 months and the project was officially concluded on February 28, 2021.
